Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka with extremely heavy rains, causing widespread floods and landslides across many parts of the island.
The rainfall was massive — in some places more than 300 mm in a short time — which triggered flash floods, overflow of rivers and reservoirs, and landslides especially in hilly and low-lying areas.
ЁЯТФ Impact: Loss, Displacement & Damage
The latest official numbers report that around 465 people have died so far from floods and landslides, with hundreds still missing.
Over 1.55 million people (more than 430,000 families) across the country have been affected. Many homes were destroyed or damaged.

Tens of thousands are displaced — sheltering in emergency centres while relief efforts continue.
Infrastructure suffered badly: roads and bridges damaged or collapsed, railway and transport disrupted, power and communications lines down in many areas.
In major population centres like the capital Colombo and surrounding suburbs, flooding surged after river water rose — many areas under water, forcing evacuations and rescue operations

ЁЯЪи Government Response & Emergency Relief
The country's disaster agencies and armed forces have been mobilized: navy, air force and police along with volunteers are rescuing people, clearing blocked roads, and delivering aid.

The government declared a state of emergency to coordinate disaster response and appealed for national and international support.
Financial support for cleaning up damaged homes has been raised — from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 25,000 — to help affected households begin recovery.
ЁЯМН Wider Context & Why It Matters
This flooding is among the worst natural disasters Sri Lanka has seen in decades — many compare the scale of destruction to past major floods.
Experts warn that such extreme weather — heavy rainfall, severe storms — is becoming more frequent, raising concerns about climate change and long-term disaster preparedness.
The flood damage also threatens agriculture, livelihoods, homes, and long-term stability for many families — recovery will take time and collective effort.
