A student once asked his teacher:
“We commit so many sins, but Allah does not seem to punish us. Why is that?”
The teacher replied:
“Allah is punishing you in many ways, but you do not realize it.”
Has He not taken away from you the sweetness of speaking to Him with a soft, humble heart?
Is there any greater punishment than a heart that can no longer cry before Allah?
Do not your days pass without even reading a single page of the Qur’an?
You may have heard Allah’s verse:
‘If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbling itself and breaking apart out of fear of Allah.’
Yet do you not walk away from it as if it had no effect on you?
Long nights pass by you.
Do you not go through them without standing even for a moment in prayer?
Ramadan, the six days of Shawwal, and the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah pass by you —
and do you not feel that you have been deprived of the ability (tawfīq) to use them in the way Allah loves?
What punishment could be greater than this?
Do acts of worship not feel heavy upon you?
Has your tongue not been held back from the remembrance of Allah?
Do you not feel yourself becoming weak before desires and temptations?
Are you not being tested by greed for wealth, status, and fame?
What punishment could be greater than this?
Have sins like backbiting, spreading gossip, and lying not become easy for you?
Has the Hereafter not been pushed aside, while this worldly life has become your greatest concern?
What is all this, if not Allah’s punishment?
My dear son, be careful.
The lightest of Allah’s punishments is what you recognize as loss in wealth and people.
But the most severe of Allah’s punishments is when your heart no longer feels anything.
O Allah,
we place our hope in Your mercy.
Forgive us for every moment we spent without remembering You.
Strengthen īmān in our hearts,
and grant us death as believers (mu’minīn). 🤲🏻
